Columbia, SC, February 19, 2004 - SCANA Corp. (NYSE:SCG) is the recipient of the Secretary of Labor’s 2003 Opportunity Award for establishing and instituting comprehensive workforce strategies to ensure equal employment opportunities.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao presented SCANA with the prestigious award today during ceremonies in Washington.

Each year, the Labor Department honors one federal contractor that exemplifies best corporate practices with regard to equal employment opportunity.

In accepting the award, Neville Lorick, president and chief operating officer of South Carolina Electric & Gas Co., SCANA’s principal subsidiary, said equal employment opportunity is more than just a compliance program at SCANA.

"The commitment to equal employment opportunity is woven into all of our core business practices," Lorick said. "We try to maintain a structure that supports compliance with good checks and balances and accountability to ensure we apply our programs fairly and evenly.

"Our company’s core values statement contains six key values, one of which is to ‘respect diversity and care for each other.’ This value statement provides a solid foundation for going above and beyond what is required. These are values that all of our 5,500 employees embrace.

“It is on their behalf that I accept this prestigious award," Lorick said.

Past recipients of the Secretary’s Opportunity Award include Qualcomm, Inc, Eli Lilly and Company, United Technologies, Xerox Corp., Proctor and Gamble, Motorola Corp. and Westinghouse Electric Corp.
