October 12, 2006, Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G), principal subsidiary of SCANA Corporation (NYSE:SCG), will take the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station offline to begin a scheduled refueling outage this weekend. After a year-and-a-half operating cycle, the Summer Station will be taken offline Oct. 14. This will be the 16th time the plant has refueled since it began commercial operation in 1984.
Approximately one-third of Summer Station's 157 fuel assemblies are replaced every 18 months. During the outage, SCE&G will perform preventive and scheduled maintenance work that cannot be performed when the plant is in operation.
“This has been an extremely successful operating cycle,” said Jeff Archie, vice president of nuclear operations for SCE&G. “We surpassed one million safe work hours during this time and experienced the second longest continuous run since the plant began operation.
“The continued focus of our employees on nuclear excellence has allowed us to achieve these accomplishments,” continued Archie. “I'm proud of their hard work, but I am even more proud of their dedication to achieving and maintaining nuclear excellence in all aspects of our operation. Continually striving for improvement is what has made V.C. Summer an industry leader.”
The refueling outage for the 1,000-megawatt plant will last until late November. While the nuclear plant is out of service, SCE&G’s other generating plants will provide electric power for its customers.
