April 12, 2004, Columbia, SC, - South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G), principal subsidiary of SCANA Corporation (NYSE: SCG), reported today that the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station has returned to service following a 12-day outage to repair a small weld defect at the plant. The plant is currently producing power and is in the process of ramping-up to 100 percent capacity.

The 1,000 megawatt plant, which is located near Columbia, South Carolina, is jointly owned by SCE&G (two-thirds) and the South Carolina Public Service Authority (one-third), a state-owned utility. SCE&G is the plant operator.

The resulting small water leak, which was detected by monitoring equipment located inside the plant's containment building, was located in a one and one-half (1 ½) inch seal injection pipe that is attached to one of the plant's reactor coolant pumps. Although the amount of leakage was less than one pint per minute, plant personnel shut the plant down to make the necessary repairs as required by regulation.

Plant Manager Jeff Archie noted that all safety systems responded normally during both the shut down and restart activities. "At no time did the condition pose any danger to the health of plant workers, the public or to the environment," said Archie. "During the short outage, plant personnel did an excellent job of evaluating and determining the ultimate cause of the event. This evaluation led to a comprehensive repair that included installation of a thicker pipe and additional pipe supports."

The company reported that it had enough available system capacity to meet the daily load demand of its customers while the Summer Station was off line.
