Columbia, S.C., Aug. 14, 2004 - Approximately 45 South Carolina Electric & Gas employees and contractors left Columbia at 10 a.m., heading to the Charleston area to help with storm restorations efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Charley. Customers without power in that area totaled around 32,000.

The Columbia-based crews heading to Charleston include 24 line workers with 12 bucket trucks, 15 tree-trimming personnel as well as support and security employees.

Once SCE&G's crews arrive onsite, they will immediately begin to restore power to essential services, including hospitals and water and sewer plants. Crews will work in self-contained teams, which will allow them to work independently to restore power quickly to as many customers as possible.

SCE&G customers should report outages or downed power lines by calling
(888) 333-4465. Customers are reminded to follow safety guidelines, such as avoiding downed power lines, following the storm.
