Columbia, SC, June 22, 2005 - SCANA Corp.'s after-school, homework center program has been chosen as one of six winners nationwide for the National School and Business Partnership Award.

The award, which is sponsored by The Council for Corporate & School Partnerships, an oversight committee created by The Coca-Cola Company in 2001 with a purpose to identify, create and support exemplary partnerships between businesses and schools. The Council recognizes those partnerships making a positive impact on student achievement, school improvement and/or the overall educational experience.

SCANA was one of 170 applicants from 39 states vying for the award. The six winners receive $10,000 each to further the efforts of their partnerships.

"We're extremely honored and pleased to have received this very prestigious award," said Norvell Pettus, SCANA's coordinator for the homework center program. "Our program has been up and running for more than 12 years now and it has really made a difference for many students – not just in their grades, but also in their social development.

"The homework center program is a way for our company to support the communities we serve while filling a void in the midst of federal and state budget cuts for after-school programs," she explained.

SCANA began its homework center program in South Carolina in 1992. Since that time, the program has grown considerably and centers now operate in three states, including Georgia and North Carolina. Thousands of children have benefited from the homework centers, where they receive additional instruction and reinforcement from their own teachers in a supervised, structured environment.

In the 2004-'05 school year, more than 90 percent of the students enrolled in the homework center program improved or maintained their reading and math scores. In addition to SCANA, the other partnerships recognized by the Council included:
  • Brookhaven Elementary and Monongalia Health System (West Virginia)
  • East Ridge High School and Associated General Contractors (Tennessee)
  • Ohio Avenue Elementary School and National City Bank (Ohio)
  • Statesville Road Elementary School and Beacon Partners, Inc. (North Carolina)
  • West Hardeeville School and Del Webb's Sun City Hilton Head (South Carolina)
