SCE&G Warns Residents About Potential Scam Artists

COLUMBIA, S.C., November 20, 2006 – South Carolina Electric and Gas Co. (SCE&G) is asking customers to be on the lookout for scam artists posing as utility employees.

Last Thursday, two men who claimed they worked for "the power company" entered a home in West Columbia and asked to see the "switch box." The men, who were not wearing SCE&G uniforms, charged $30 for their services and after they left, the residents noticed a jar of coins missing from their home.

"The only reason one of our employees would ask to enter a customer’s home would be if the customer called our customer service line to request a visit first," said Ronnie Goebel, general manager of security for SCANA Corp., SCE&G’s parent company.

Field employees, such as meter readers or linemen, are identified by their blue SCE&G uniforms, white company ID badges with photo and marked SCE&G truck.

"We encourage our customers to ask to see those ID badges if they have any concerns about our employees in the field," Goebel added.

If someone not matching this description arrives unannounced and introduces themselves as an SCE&G employee, the company recommends refusing entry and calling Customer Service at 1-800-251-7234 or dialing 911 if they feel threatened.

South Carolina Electric & Gas Company is a regulated public utility engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity to approximately 613,000 customers in 24 counties in the central, southern and southwestern portions of South Carolina.
