COLUMBIA, S.C. (Mar. 21, 2007) – South Carolina Electric and Gas (SCE&G) has been named one of the top electric utilities in the country for its 2006 commercial customer service. The award, from Edison Electric Institute (EEI), recognized the company for its outstanding service to multi-site businesses, such as retailers Staples and Wal-Mart, hotels, restaurants and other businesses.

“There were 101 utilities up for this honor and to be one of only a handful awarded means a lot,” said Steve Chapman, who heads up SCE&G’s commercial customer service engineering division. “It shows how committed we are to our customers.”

More than 200 representatives from more than 100 businesses voted for the best overall customer service among utilities in three categories – small, medium and large – based on the number of commercial customers they serve. SCE&G tied with Kansas City Power and Light to beat nearly two dozen other utilities competing in the medium category.

“A lot of the utilities we were up against have large departments devoted to serving this group of customers; we do it with just two people, Penny Stevens and Kim Lucas, who have a multitude of other duties to perform as well. I think that shows the way we strive to exceed our customers’ expectations,” Chapman said.

Both Staples and Food Lion have previously named an SCE&G employee their national account representative of the year.

SCE&G is a regulated public utility that provides natural gas service to approximately 297,000 customers in South Carolina. The company also is engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity to approximately 623,000 customers throughout the state.
