SCE&G’s third-party notification provides “safety net” for customers

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Nov. 26, 2008) – As the weather turns cold throughout the state, South Carolina Electric and Gas Co. (SCE&G) wants to encourage customers to take steps to protect their families. With that in mind, SCE&G is asking residents to take advantage of the company’s third-party notification program.

Third-party notification allows customers to provide SCE&G a name and address of another individual – a family member, friend or neighbor – who can be notified by mail at the same time a customer learns their account is delinquent.

“Our third party notification is really a safety net for those customers in jeopardy of having their service disconnected,” said Molly Morris, General Manager, SCE&G Customer Serivce Operations. It’s a mechanism that ensures they’re aware of their situation, especially during periods of extreme weather conditions.”

Morris said the service can be especially valuable for people with elderly parents who are SCE&G customers, or for parents of college students who are taking on bill-paying responsibilities for the first time.

Customers interested in requesting third-party notification can call SCE&G customer service at 1-800-251-7234. Adding third party notification requires the consent of the account holder or someone with proof of Power of Attorney on behalf of the customer.

SCE&G is a regulated public utility engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity to approximately 649,000 customers in 26 counties in the central, southern and southwestern portions of South Carolina.
