Jenkinsville, S.C. (Nov. 16, 2009) — Students at McCrorey-Liston Elementary School in Fairfield County can soon have class outside on pretty days thanks to a community service project by South Carolina Electric & Gas, the Shaw Group, and Westinghouse Electric Company.

More than 30 employees from the companies have volunteered to build an outdoor classroom in one day for the 204 students starting 9 a.m. Nov. 18. They will have lunch with students 11:30 a.m. For directions to the school, click on http://mle.fairfield.k12.sc.us/directions.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank SCE&G, Shaw and Westinghouse for donating their time and services to the students and staff of McCrorey- Liston Elementary School,” said principal Chandra Bell. “My heart is filled with joy knowing that the students will have an outdoor classroom to enhance their educational experiences. This outdoor classroom ties directly into our vision of promoting literacy across the curriculum to enhance student achievement. We will use this area as a reading garden so our students can experience learning in an outdoor setting.”

Located in front of the school, the showpiece of the outdoor classroom will be five 8-foot, multi-colored benches in the shape of a horseshoe with a birdbath in the center. Trees will be planted throughout, complemented by birdhouses, butterfly bushes, flower beds, a turtle-shaped rock bed and other features that will enrich the outdoor reading experience.

The project is a $5,000 gift from SCE&G, Westinghouse, and Shaw. Shaw and Westinghouse are the contractors for the design and construction of the new nuclear units planned at SCE&G’s V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in Jenkinsville.

“We are fortunate to partner with Shaw and Westinghouse because they share the same spirit of giving back to the community that we value at SCE&G,” said Jeff Archie, senior vice president of SCE&G nuclear operations. “We hope the addition of the outdoor classroom will spark an excitement in children at McCrorey-Liston to explore the world through reading often.”
