COLUMBIA, S.C. (Oct. 20, 2009) – National celebrity Chef Marvin Woods has been named the keynote speaker of the upcoming 2009 Lights on Afterschool stakeholder breakfast and celebration on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7:30 a.m at the Drew Wellness Center in Columbia.

Chef Woods will also meet with SCE&G Homework Center students in Richland One to demonstrate making some delicious and nutritious afterschool snacks. They will meet in the district’s central kitchen that afternoon at 3 p.m. at 1224 Whitney Street.

Chef Woods, an Emmy-nominated television host, chef and author, is known nationally for his work with youth in combating childhood obesity. His program “Droppin’ Knowledge with Chef Marvin Woods” is a wellness program aimed at unifying the entire community – parents, teachers, corporations, government leaders and food companies – in an entertaining way to make a positive difference in the overall health of kids. He engages students in afterschool programs and teaches them how to cook and prepare nutritious meals for better health.

Lights on Afterschool is a nationwide movement working to ensure that all children have access to quality after-school programs. SCE&G currently operates 26 Homework Center sites that are part of this initiative. Now in its 17th year, the Homework Centers continue serving the community and enhancing education after regular school hours by providing a safe, healthy and structured learning environment where students complete class assignments and learn proper study habits. Each Homework Center operates with two SCE&G-funded certified teachers.

“We are so happy to have Chef Marvin lead our Homework Center students in an effort to develop healthy eating habits,” said Norvell Pettus, director of SCE&G’s Homework Centers. “Childhood obesity and health issues are becoming more of a problem for our youth, so they need us to be more engaged and guide them in making healthy choices. The better prepared they are, the better their lives will be.”

Lights on Afterschool is sponsored by Richland One, SCE&G, the City of Columbia, Junior Achievement, State Farm Insurance, Junior League of Columbia, Univeristy of South Carolina, Palmetto Health Hospital and the National Afterschool Alliance.
