SCE&G Programs Prepare Customers During Energy Awareness Month

Columbia, S.C. (Oct. 12, 2010) — October is Energy Awareness Month and the month in which cooler temperatures come our way. South Carolina Electric & Gas would like to remind its customers of the many resources and programs that are available to help them analyze and take control of their energy use:

  • Energy Analyzer. Energy use and costs can be analyzed on a monthly basis with the Energy Analyzer tool. Customers can review their average usage, typical energy costs, consumption history, temperature impacts and other factors that may affect their monthly bill. Detailed charts are also available online to show how much energy is being used month-to-month.
  • Budget Billing. Avoid fluctuations in your SCE&G bill by signing up for this feature. SCE&G estimates your bills for the next 12 months and spreads that amount into 12 equal payments. For each of the next 12 months, your bill will show your actual usage, your total amount due and your special Budget Billing amount.
  • Home Energy Audit Tool. See how much energy your home appliances use, and learn what measures you can take to enhance efficiency with features such as appliance calculators and a home energy audit library.
  • Video Tips on Weatherization. Learn how to make your home more energy efficient with these helpful online videos that provide useful information on installing insulation, managing your thermostat, and caulking and weather stripping doors and windows.
  • Energy Saving Tips. Customers can find everyday energy saving tips and information – and join the EnergyWise conversation blog – on the SCE&G Web site at Additionally, customers can sign up to follow SCE&G on Twitter and receive a “Tip a Day” throughout the month through its Twitter channel.
  • Home Energy Check-up. This program can help SCE&G residential customers identify ways to improve their home’s energy efficiency. A member of the SCE&G Energy Team visually inspects a customer’s windows, doors, caulking, weather-stripping, insulation levels, appliances, water heater and heating and cooling systems. The service is free to SCE&G residential customers.
For the Home Energy Check-up, customers will be asked to complete and submit a one-page questionnaire about their home. An energy services representative will then contact the customer to schedule an appointment.

Energy Awareness Month began in 1981 as American Energy Week, growing into the current one-month observance at the U.S. Department of Energy in 1986. President George Bush proclaimed October Energy Awareness Month in 1991.
