Water is critical to everything we do and is one of the area’s greatest treasures. In South Carolina, in particular, it serves an important role because it’s used by SCE&G to generate power, as well as by our communities for drinking and by our families for recreation.
We recognize our responsibility to manage our electric generating operations in a way that is environmentally sound. We monitor water quality in all water bodies impacted by our facilities and engage in ongoing studies that are focused on the health of aquatic life.
Water has played a special role in our company since the early days of electric generation. Just as our historic Columbia Canal relied on flowing water to generate electricity, subsequent hydroelectric generating facilities rely on flowing waters. Employees at all of our plants - coal-fired, combustion turbine, hydroelectric, or nuclear - work diligently to minimize the impact of operations on our water resources.
Lake Murray
What began as a source of energy for the Columbia area over 70 years ago has become a major recreation area, an abundant resource for drinking water, fisheries and wildlife habitats - as well as for hydroelectric power.
